Demolition Begins at Madison Marshall Mall

Crews started the demolition process Monday at Madison Marshall Mall.  The demolition process is expected to last 2 months.

The mall has been closed since 2015 due to structural concerns.

Madison Marshall Mall opened in 1945 and was home to 15 stores.  Over the years, 160 business resided in the mall.  It was known for it's wonderful architecture and riverwalk views.  When the dam collapsed in 2012, flooding damaged a lot of the surrounding neighborhoods and forced people in the area to move away.  When the people left, so did the stores' customers.  Long time residents, 'Marcy's' and 'Holly's Home Store' were one of the original stores that opened, and was one of the last stores to close.

The last of the stores closed in 2014.  The mall quickly started to deteriorate and become overrun by animals and overgrown vegetation.  Not only was it becoming an eyesore, it was falling down.  City officials decided the best way to handle the situation was to tear it down.

Once the demolition process has been completed, the land will be restored to a grassy field in hopes that, someday, the community will rebuild itself.
